1. Translate the pack layout into model constraints

Record the chemistry and actual cells in series, such as 16S LiFePO4. Nominal pack voltage is not precise enough because battery systems sold under the same voltage label can use different series counts.

The planned operating count must sit inside the supported range of the exact product model. Also record capacity and whether the work is a new build or a replacement, because an existing enclosure, harness, display, or connector can narrow the acceptable hardware.

Do not order from the maximum “S” number

A model name showing a high maximum cell count does not prove that every lower count, connector set, or application is appropriate. Check the published operating range for the selected SKU.

2. Convert the power path into a current requirement

Start with the current expected during sustained operation, then list the duration and size of temporary surges. For an early estimate, inverter input current is related to output power divided by battery voltage and efficiency, but the final rating must come from the complete electrical design.

The BMS cannot be sized in isolation. Cell capability, busbars, cables, lugs, fuse, contactor, enclosure temperature, airflow, and installation quality all share the same current path. A larger label does not correct a weak connection elsewhere.

SUSTAINED DUTY

Record the current and duration

Describe the normal operating current and how long it is expected to continue, including ambient temperature and enclosure conditions.

TRANSIENT DUTY

Name the equipment causing the surge

Motor starts, compressor loads, and inverter peaks should be described with duration instead of reduced to one unexplained “maximum current” number.

3. Treat balancing as a maintenance decision, not a repair

State the cell capacity, expected imbalance, charging pattern, and how quickly correction is expected. Those details are more useful than asking for the highest available balance-current figure.

Active balancing can move energy between cells, but it cannot repair a damaged cell, compensate for poor matching, correct loose busbars, or replace a suitable charging strategy. Investigate the pack condition before increasing balance current.

4. Build a communication evidence pack

For a standalone battery, state whether phone monitoring or a local screen is required. For an integrated system, provide the inverter brand, full model number, communication port, expected protocol, existing cable part number, and any firmware information available.

CAN and RS485 name electrical interfaces; they do not identify a universal message set. Two products can expose the same bus and still be unable to exchange the required data without the correct protocol, pinout, cable, and software support.

Include clear photos of the inverter label and communication ports, the current BMS label, connector faces, cable labels, and any compatibility menu shown on an existing display or app.
